Hoo Haa Beamers

Preston Park – It’s all good.

Monday, June 4th, 2007
yBrighton Beamers continued their unbeaten 2007 season with resounding victory over the Preston Park Massive(s). Skipper Rob Siddens marshalled a random troupe of chatty nincompoops around the park with the languid authority of a man at ease with power and responsibility.

A good start was built on by Smithy (46) and Riches (17) after Maff (pictured left) hit across the straight one. Then a Calypso Collapso the like of which hasn’t been seen in a long time – well a couple of months – took the Beamers from 117 – 3 to 119-8 in a matter of 2 overs. It was a sorry procession. The ‘Manx Cat’ of a tail wagged and wagged and then wagged some more with the last two wickets putting on over 50. Thanks goodness, Beamers 170 all out.

The Old skool opened up the attack, Musset and Renshaw, like a pair of old marine diesels were coaxed into life, and then replaced with Nicholls and Young who both succeeded in claiming a scalp, Gordy claimed the only Preston park batter who looked any good. This was the first time since 1889 that these four had bowled together. It was like watching the Battle of Britain flight, noisy, belching evil fumes, and reminiscent of a time ‘when once we were warriors’. Now it’s more of a nostalgic enthusiast club run by old men, with reddening noses, who will shortly be wearing tatty blazers. Nevertheless age and wisdom was enough to scupper the Preston Parkers, wickets fell with regularity and runs came slowly.

‘Yoof squad’ Smithy was brought on late to mop up the tail with some fizzing daisy cutters and The Vicar of Dobley (left) himself wrapped up the innings by laying his hands deftly around a neat C&B.
It’s all good.
